Breakaway Brewing, a biking-themed business, is preparing for an October opening in Government Hill.

Bikes and brews will share a lane this fall when Breakaway Brewing opens in Government Hill. The upcoming themed brewery will raise a toast to the love of cycling and craft beer.

Chris Pal-Freeman, who co-owns Breakaway Brewing with his wife, Jean Pal-Freeman, tells MySA that a meeting of biking and brewing was a "natural" crossover. The owner is an avid cyclist and says most of the friends he's made in the sport are also craft beer fans.

"It was really, for me, never even a consideration for not to have it be cycling themed," he adds.

Chris Pal-Freeman's experience in brewing dots the country, but even before he was moving from the Pacific Northwest to Pittsburgh to Texas he was relocating as a child in an Air Force family. He says he lived in San Antonio when he was about 4 years old.

San Antonio's brewing history, which dates back to the late 1880s with Pearl and Lone Star Beer, has grown since then. Today, independent brewers like the longtime Blue Star, Freetail, Road Map, Back Unturned, Black Laboratory, and more are propelling San Antonio's beer scene.

Breakaway Brewing will join the realm with what Chris Pal-Freeman has learned from more than a decade living in Portland and brewing with The Washington Brewing Company in Washington, Pennsylvania, about 40 minutes outside of Pittsburgh.

"Most of my beers are going to be more balanced, probably going to be closer to the five to six range on average (alcohol by volume)," he says. "I'm not I'm not stuck on any one style, I kind of experiment quite a bit."

Chris Pal-Freeman points to his Mexican ale, an imperial red IPA, and grapefruit IPA as the kinds of beers he's hoping to bring to Government Hill. Breakway Brewing will also offer wine as well as non-alcoholic options like hop water and craft soda.

The hangout is slated for an October opening. Chris Pal-Freemen says the interior of the space is being remodeled to become Breakway Brewing. He plans to have about 10 beers on tap which will be inspired by European Grand Tours. To get the cycling theme spinning, the business will have seven bike racks that will feature drink rails on them that will allow patrons to stay with their bike and enjoy a beer. The owner says there will also be a park-quality repair stand with a pump attachment for public use.

"We want to be the place that people come hang out and be very neighborhood centric," he adds.

Breakaway Brewing will be located at 1518 East Grayson Street near Fort Sam Houston.
