annual picnic set for Aug. 21

STEUBENVILLE — The Funseekers met July 6 at Scaffidi’s Restaurant and Tavern in Steubenville with President Judi Gaynor presiding and introducing Mary Alice Meyer to conduct the opening ceremonies.

That included the Pledge of Allegiance, singing “God Bless America” and a brief blessing. Gaynor acknowledged July birthdays and anniversaries before dinner was served to the 56 members attending.

After dinner, Vice President Kathy DiBenedetto called several games of bingo. Winners of cash prizes were Linda Aloi, Roberta Antinone, George Williams, Lou Panebianco and Marilyn Izzy.

The business meeting included the reading and approval of reports from the secretary and treasurer.

Gaynor reviewed plans for the annual picnic which will be held Aug. 21 at the Follansbee Park Shelter House. The picnic will begin around 1 p.m. with dinner at 2 p.m. The phone committee will be calling for reservations for members and any guests they plan on bringing.

At Gaynor’s suggestion, the membership voted to suspend the August meeting in favor of the picnic.

Charlotte Christian, treasurer, reviewed the treasury balance and the cost of having the picnic catered. After discussion, the members voted to have the event catered. Active members may bring guests at a cost of $10 per guest.

A board/picnic committee meeting was scheduled to finalize the picnic plans.

Tour Director Regina Truax reviewed the trip and excursion schedule and announced two new trips have been added. Trips are open to everyone in the area. For information contact Truax at (304) 723-0419.

Trips planned include: Aug. 27, Rivers Casino andShow featuring the “Golden Boys Tribute to Frankie Avalon and Fabian;” Aug. 29-Sept. 3, Myrtle Beach hotel and shows; Oct. 7, Applefest in Franklin, Pa.; Oct 17-21, the Arc Encounter and Creation Museum, Cincinnati; Oct. 22, DooWop at Capitol Theatre, Wheeling; and Nov. 17-19, New York City including the 911 Memorial, a guided tour of Manhattan and the Rockettes.

Roberta Antinone won the 50-50 drawing. Door prizes were presented by Ray and Jean Dalfonso to Maggie Icuss, Terry Mamula, Mary Alice Meyer, FrankWisnieski, Ron Fallert, Rose Chappano, Phyllis Riapos and Judi Gaynor.

The next meeting will be the picnic on Aug. 21 beginning at 1 p.m. at the Follansbee Park Shelter House. Door prizes will be presented by Larry and Mary Beth Bauer.

WEIRTON — The Weirton Christian Center Community Garden will hold its grand opening on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

The garden is located at 117 Ivy St., across the street from the Christian Center. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at noon with the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Harold Miller.

A children’s demonstration will be held at 1 p.m. as will demonstrations on square-foot gardening and composting at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Everyone attending has an opportunity to win a food dehydrator, air fryer and coffee maker.

A limited amount of fresh produce will be available at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

St. Thomas to begin accepting

WEIRTON — St. Thomas Episcopal Church will begin accepting phone orders on Monday for peach shortcakes, sandwiches, haluski and other food sold at its upcoming Peach Festival.

In its 59th year, the event will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 13 at the church on Three Springs Drive, with food available for take-out only.

Orders may be placed that day, but individuals also may place an order by calling (304) 723-4120 and leaving their name and phone number. To avoid any misunderstandings, a church member will call back to take the orders.

HOPEDALE — United Mine Workers of America Local No. 1304 will hold a meeting on Aug. 6 at the Hopedale American Legion, located at 48225 Rabbit Road, Hopedale.

Breakfast will be at 9:30 a.m. with the meeting to follow at 10 a.m.

‘Bee Symposium’ Aug. 13 at Harrison County Fairgrounds

CADIZ — The Harrison County Beekeepers Association will hold its “Bee Symposium” on Aug. 13 at the Harrison County Fairgrounds Building, beginning at 9 a.m.

Special speakers willl include James and Maryann Frazier addressing “What’s Wrong With Our Bees” and “Where the Wild Things Are.” Topics include: “Pesticides,” “Varroa Mites” and “Colony Collapse Disorder.”

The symposium will include a silent auction, drawings and a light lunch.

Geri-Fit strength training class is offered at Brooke Library

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library is offering Geri-Fit, a 45-minute strength training class for older adults.

Participants start lifting light weights, usually while seated and can work at their own pace. They should bring a set of light dumbbells, a stretch band and water to drink.

The video fitness classes are held from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Follansbee Library, 844 Main St., and from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at the Brooke County Library, 945 Main St.

Those interested in participating in the free classes should register by calling (304) 737-1551 ext. 106.

community yard sale Aug. 5-6

HOPEDALE — The 23rd-annual Hopedale community yard sale will be held Aug. 5 and 6 from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m.

Anyone participating in the sale is asked to contact the city building to be placed on the map that will be available at various family yard sale locations.
