Registration is open for the 43rd World Wiffle Ball Championship, set for July 16 and 17 at Memorial Park in Midlothian.

All proceeds from the event will go to the South Suburban Humane Society, and organizers expect the total donations to the organization over the last five tournaments to exceed $10,000 after this year’s event.

Registration is $149 per team, and each team registered before June 15 receives a T-shirt for each player. Final deadline to register is July 1. The New Carlisle Newts of New Carlisle, Indiana, won last year’s tournament and the age range of all competitors was 13 to 73.

South Suburban College in South Holland and the Calumet Area Industrial Commission have partnered to offer a free Manufacturing Skills and Training Bootcamp, an 80-hour, 5-week program that prepares people for college-level manufacturing programs.

Students who complete the program earn the National Safety Council forklift certification, the OSHA 10 safety standards certification and an SSC certificate of participation. They will also receive plant tours, interviews with potential employers and the opportunity to connect with college representatives. Participants may even be eligible to earn a stipend.

The Manufacturing Skills and Training Bootcamp begins June 6 at the Thornton Fractional High School Center for Academics and Technology at 1605 Wentworth Ave., Calumet City. The boot camp is open to all adults over the age of 18. Seating is limited and registration is required. More information is at calumetareaindustrial.com/bridge-program.

The Evergreen Park Community High School Sports Complex Fitness Center and outdoor swimming pool, at the site of the former Evergreen Racquet & Fitness Club at 2700 W. 91st Street in Evergreen Park, is now accepting memberships for its Fitness Center and outdoor swimming pool.

The Fitness Center has a variety of equipment, including treadmills, exercise bikes, rowing machines, weight machines and free weights.

Monthly Fitness Center fees for Evergreen Park residents are $20, or $115 for six months, or $200 a year. For non-Evergreen Park residents, fees are $33 a month, $190 for six months, and $280 a year. Evergreen Park seniors can get a discounted yearly membership fee for $145, and non-Evergreen Park seniors can get the same for $195 a year.

Memberships for the outdoor swimming pool at the EPCHS Sports Complex will also be available after Memorial Day.

A rummage sale will be held at Orland Park Church from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 20 and from 8 a.m. to noon May 21 at the church, 7500 Sycamore Dr., Orland Park.

All of the proceeds from the sale, sponsored by the church’s orphan ministry, will help orphans locally and around the world. The church also is looking for donations of household items, clothing, etc., which can be dropped off from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 19.

Trying to help outside cats? A program from 10:30 a.m. to noon May 28 will present information on Trap, Neuter, Return, which helps reduce feral cat populations. The program is at the Willow Springs Community Center, 8156 Archer Ave. 60480.

The presentation includes information on tricks of baiting and setting humane traps that will make the job easier, as well as a list of low cost clinics, and instruct you on how to transport cats safely. Traps are on loan with a deposit that is fully refundable upon their return. Caretakers who attend a workshop receive priority for TNR assistance.
